| 14th May 2008 | NEIL HAMMOND, MARCUS HUNT AND MARC ABBOTT THE BIG WINNERS AT PRESENTATION EVENING Reserve team regular Neil Hammond was the big winner at Haverhill Rovers Football Club's Presentation Evening on Saturday 10th May 2008 when he took home a trio of awards, first teamers Marcus Hunt and Marc Abbott also taking home a brace of trophies each. Chairman Steve Brown opened the evening by commenting on the up and down season that had just passed. He gave thanks to Steve Taylor, Paul Goodman, Neil Farlie and Hunt for their managerial efforts with the first team, especially Hunt, who had done exceptionally in the circumstances. Brown also thanked committee members Dave Adams and Danny Wakeling for their help on match days, president Terry McGerty for the unbelievable time he spends helping the club, media officer Steven Esdale for his contributions, secretary Karen Smith, who was stepping down from her role but staying on as a committee member, treasurer Sandra McGerty for her excellent job with the finances of the club, Kerri and "Ted" Beavis for their efforts with match day refreshments, Mick Sisson for selling merchandise and John Linnane for the large amount of time he spends running the bar. The President's Award went to "Ted Beavis" with the Chairman's Award going to Dave Gooch for the large amounts of time he spends on the pitch as well as several other tasks. The Clubperson of the Year trophy went to John Linnane. Brown then announced that Hunt won the First Team Supporters' Player of the Year award with Joe Harvey in second and Marc Abbott in third. The Reserve Team Supporters' Player of the Year award went to Hammond with Gareth Thomas in second and Paul Abbott third. First Team Goal of the Season was awarded to Marc Abbott for his long range strike against King's Lynn Reserves at Hamlet Croft. First team player/manager Hunt then took to the floor and thanked Neil Franklin and Farlie for their assistance with the first team. First Team Manager's Player of the Year went to Marc Abbott for the 100% effort he puts it in at all times, whether it be in training or during a match. Brown then awarded Hunt with the First Team Top Goalscorer trophy for the 14 goals he scored last season. First Team Players' Player of the Year was Harvey and flowers were also presented to Kerri Beavis. Reserve team manager Peter Betts then thanked the committee, especially Brown and Linnane, before thanking committee member Keith Willis, who sadly passed away on 30th March 2008. Betts also thanked Lee Sharp (for producing match reports) and assistant manager James Catten for their assistance. Betts also announced that he had resigned as reserve team manager earlier in the evening after 4 years in the position. He stated that he had achieved what he had set out to do and hoped that someone carries on where he has left off. His future includes a 5 month trip in July to work with the New York Red Bulls. For the reserve team, the Top Goalscorer award went to Lee Sharp for his 19 goals in the previous campaign. Goal of the Season was chosen by the players and went to Jamie Challis for his goal against Debenham LC Reserves. Manager's Young Player of the Year went to goalkeeper Tom Edwards, in a season that saw him keep 11 clean sheets since he arrived at the club, with the Manager's Merit Award going to Paul Abbott for his attitude and ability. Player's Player of the Year, with almost 75% of the vote, was Hammond. The Managers' Player of the Year was a joint award after the team had been so successful defensively; Hammond and Lee Hurkett, who Betts commented had "improved unbelievably and has got better every year since he was 15", shared it. Brown ended the evening by thanking the players for their efforts. ----- SUMMARY OF AWARD WINNERS : President's Award - "Ted" Beavis FIRST TEAM RESERVE TEAM |

| 4th May 2008 | RESERVES COMPLETE THE TREBLE A great season for the reserve side finished even better last week when, after capturing the Ridgeons Reserve Teams League South Division title, they defeated Walsham-le-Willows Reserves (7-6 on penalties after a 1-1 draw after extra time) to capture the Ridgeons Reserve Teams League Divisional Cup and then beat Ipswich Wanderers Reserves 1-0 to win the Suffolk Senior Reserve Cup in only its second season. Well done, lads. |
| 14th April 2008 | RESERVES WIN RIDGEONS RESERVE TEAMS LEAGUE SOUTH DIVISION TITLE Saturday's 2-0 home win against Witham Town Reserves (the goals provided by a 20 yard volley from Brad Deeks and one from Ben Cowling) meant that the reserve team won the Ridgeons Reserve Teeams League South Division title. | 4th April 2008 | FORMER HEAD GROUNDSMAN KEITH WILLIS PASSES AWAY It is with great sadness that the club reports that former head groundsman, committee member and long time part of Haverhill Rovers Football Club, Keith Willis, has passed away. Keith had been suffering from heart problems for several weeks and eventually succumbed to these in the early hours of Sunday 30th March 2008 at Papworth Hospital. In recent years Keith had done a marvellous job tending to the playing fields at Hamlet Croft and creating the best playing surface the club had had for some time. He had also been a committee member since 2005, during which time he showed great commitment to the club in the way that it was run and shaping its future development. Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with his family and friends. The club will be holding a minute's silence in Keith's memory before the reserves' match home match against Wivenhoe Town Reserves on Saturday 5th April and the first team's home match against Newmarket Town on Tuesday 8th April. On a personal note I'd like to say what a fantastic person Keith was and how much I enjoyed his company. I'll always remember his banter in front of the changing rooms at home matches and the hard work he put into the club. You were a good friend, Keith, and you'll be sorely missed. |
| 14th March 2008 | FIRST TEAM PLAYER/CARETAKER MANAGER COLIN VOWDEN LEAVES HRFC
On Wednesday 12th March 2008 first team player/caretaker manager Colin Vowden left his post to take up a position at Newmarket Town Football Club. The club would like to wish Mr Vowden well in his new position and thank him for his efforts at the club both on and off the pitch over the past two years. Former first team manager Paul Goodman and first team captain Marcus Hunt have agreed to manage the side for the home match against Felixstowe & Walton United this coming Saturday (15th March 2008) with a decision on the manager(s) from the next match (away to Wisbech Town on Saturday 22nd March 2008) to be made in the near future. |
| 14th March 2008 | FIRST TEAM MANAGER STEVE TAYLOR LEAVES HAVERHILL ROVERS FOOTBALL CLUB
It was with regret that, due to work commitments and financial constraints, Haverhill Rovers Football Club manager first team manager Steve Taylor left the club on Sunday 9th March 2008. Work has meant that Mr Taylor has been travelling large distances to games recently, which has been increasingly difficult. Lack of support has meant low attendances at Hamlet Croft (just 39 and 46 for the Ridgeons League Cup Quarter and Semi Final matches recently and an average attendance of just 74 in the Premier Division since October 2007 (67 since Christmas), compared to 108 in the First Division last year) has meant that income has dried up and the club lost thousands of pounds in February, causing drastic measures to be taken and the playing budget severely reduced. The club would like to wish Mr Taylor well for the future and thank him for the outstanding work he has done for the club over the past two seasons, which has included the best F.A. Cup run in the club's history last year, Rovers winning the First Division Knock Out Cup for an unprecedented third time and promotion to the Premier Division for the first time in ten years. Player assistant manager Colin Vowden has agreed to take up the position of first team player manager with immediate effect until the end of the current season. |

| 26th October 2006 | MANAGER NOTES FOR ALDERSHOT TOWN GAME Unfortunately I was unable to include manager Steve Taylor's programme notes for the match against Aldershot Town, so I said I'd post them here instead. "Good afternoon and welcome to Hamlet Croft, home of Haverhill Rovers. I would like to give a warm welcome to all connected with Aldershot Town and hope they enjoy there short stay with us. Looking forward to today's game we all know the mammoth task in front of us today as we entertain Aldershot from the Nationwide Conference, who play 5 leagues higher than ourselves. We have managed to beat all in front of us before at home in the F.A. Cup, winning 5 games already, starting way back in August and all against higher league opposition. Unfortunately we won't be at full strength with a host of players unavailable for selection; this includes Paul Abbott, who suffered a broken leg against Kidsgrove in the last round. We wish him well and a speedy recovery. Also missing will be his brother Marc, who suffered ankle ligament damage against Gorleston last weekend. Neil Cogger is another who is missing after suffering a stress fracture of his leg against Broxbourne, also in the F.A. Cup. Dan Pilcher will be another missing after picking up a groin injury last weekend at Gorleston; he is joined by Roger Dourado and Sam Green, both suspended. So, you can see the task in front of us isn't made any easier, but we hope to have Paul Shaw and Richard Heller both back in the line up. Myself and the players have really appreciated your support for us over the last few weeks and this has helped us during these games. We will need you to be as loud as possible today to help us try to achieve our goal of getting to the First Round Proper. I can assure everyone who comes into the ground today that every Rovers player who pulls his shirt on today will be doing his very best to try to make our dream reality, so please give the players your support. One final note... we are due to lose two more players after today's game. Both of these have been loyal servants to Rovers' cause over the years, namely Jamie Challis and Paul Jenkin, both who are off travelling. I would personally would like to thank them both for their efforts over the years and says that it has been a pleasure working with you both over this season and good luck. Come on the Rovers Steve Taylor" |
| 20th October 2006 | HAVERHILL ROVERS v KIDSGROVE ATHLETIC PROGRAMMES ON EBAY If there are any of you who did not get a programme from the Kidsgrove Athletic match, or would like one to keep, these should soon be available via Ebay. |
| 20th October 2006 | F.A. CUP FOURTH ROUND QUALIFYING DRAW AND TICKET DETAILS At approximately 11:40am on Monday 16th October 2006 the F.A. Cup Fourth Round Qualifying draw was made available on TheFA.com. Rovers have again been drawn at home, the sixth time in a row, and face their toughest task so far as they take on Conference side Aldershot Town at the Croft ! Aldershot are currently 7th in the table and have ex-Wimbledon player Marcus Gayle and ex-Chelsea left back Darren Barnard among their strong squad. The match is due to take place on Saturday 28th October 2006. After much discussion it has been decided that, due to the possibility of a crowd that would exceed the capacity of Hamlet Croft, the match has been made all ticket. Tickets will cost £8 for adults, £4 for concessions and £2 for under 12s. Please do not contact HRFC for tickets. If you are an Aldershot Town fan looking for a ticket, please contact the club or go to http://www.theshots.co.uk/newspage.ink?nid=27770&newstype=t&matchid=. If you are a Haverhill fan or a neutral, tickets can be purchased from the Haverhill Arts Centre Box Office on 01440 714140 using Visa, Mastercard or Eurocard. Tickets can also be purchased by sending a stamped addressed envelope with payment (cheques made payable to S.E.B.C.) to Box Office, Town Hall Arts Centre, High Street, Haverhill, Suffolk CB9 8AR. |
| 20th October 2006 | PAUL ABBOTT FRACTURES HIS TIBIA IN TWO PLACES Defender Paul Abbott, who suffered a nasty injury at the start of the second half in the 1-0 win against Kidsgrove Athletic on Saturday 14th October 2006, has been diagnosed with a double fracture of his tibia. Paul underwent an operation on the evening of the injury and was due to be let out of hospital two days later. Unfortunately this is likely to keep him out for the rest of the season and, when the swelling goes down, he also likely to be in a cast for some time. A big thank you to everyone who helped him on the day and are supporting him now, along with the supporters who made sure that the paramedics were able to get to Paul as soon as they could once the ambulance arrived, whom we also extend our thanks to. A card has been sent to Paul and a collection was made, raising £160 for him. Hopefully you'll see him down the Croft soon and I'm sure we all wish him a speedy recovery. |

Cup Second Round Qualifying with Rovers goalkeeper Arron Benstead coming joint fourth. Gary McPhee will be at this season's FA Cup Final after the fans voted him the Player of the Second Qualifying Round. A total of 16,553 fans cast their vote, 43 per cent of which threw their support behind the Nuneaton hotshot who was nominated by BBC Radio Five Live's Mark Clemmit. Danny Toronczak of Ossett Albion, who scored twice in his side's 2-1 win over Workington, was second behind McPhee, polling 31 per cent of the votes. Kettering Town's Craig Westcarr came third with 12 per cent, while the two other nominations, Charley Hearn and Arron Benstead, of Fisher Athletic and Haverhill Rovers, both claimed seven per cent. As well as an engraved silver salver, McPhee will get to donate £500 of football equipment to a local school.

| 4th October 2006 | VOTE FOR BENSTEAD ! Rovers goalkeeper Arron Benstead has been named as one of the five nominations for Player of the Round at TheFA.com for his exploits in F.A. Cup Second Round Qualifying win against Eastbourne Borough. "Arron Benstead the Haverhill Rovers goalkeeper was outstanding in their 1-O home win over Eastbourne Borough, and is the nomination of Walter Gammie from The Times. The Eastern Counties Division One side achieved a big shock against the East Sussex side who had enjoyed a strong start in the Conference South this season.
