A long evening left Haverhill with a plum tie against Ipswich Town Reserves in the next round after eventually overcoming Newmarket on penalties.
They took the lead on 17 minutes following a corner by Louis Harper, Marcus Hunt getting the faintest of headers on the ball and Jamie Crawley only being able to clear into the roof of his own net.
Newmarket took the game into extra time with an equaliser in the 73rd minute after a well placed header by Steven Bugg.
Hunt had a penalty two minutes into extra time saved by Lee Hulyer after substitute Lee Salmons was felled by Colin Vowden, Stuart Wardley putting his side ahead once more two minutes later from the spot after Scott Wilby was brought down by Wayne Goddard.
Two minutes into added time at the end of extra time Newmarket pulled out a second equaliser, home goalkeeper Dave Walton being unable to keep Bugg's header out at his near post to send the match into penalties.
Walton was the hero as he saved from Crawley and tipped substitute Stuart Felgate's spot kicks on to the post, Louis Harper scoring Haverhill's fourth consecutive kick to put his side through.
