WOODBRIDGE TOWN
1-1
HAVERHILL ROVERS

Haverhill made their first visit to the long and narrow field at Notcutts Park since their 5-0 F.A. Vase win there five years ago in a game that also saw ex Ely City and Newmarket Town left back Jamie Thurlbourne made his debut for the away side and attacking midfielder Richard Heller return from injury.

The travellers took the lead after 11 minutes from a long throw in from the right by Wayne Goddard, Colin Vowden rising to flick the ball off his head and towards the far side of the goal, goalkeeper Marcus Garnham getting his fingertips to the ball but being unable to stop his side going a goal behind.

Woodbridge almost equalised 7 minutes later when Aaron Churchyard pushed his way through the defence before laying the ball off to Lee O'Neill, Gareth Thomas coming to Haverhill's rescue as he cleared O'Neill's effort off his own goal line. O'Neill also had two further chances before the break but goalkeeper Arron Benstead denied him on both occasions.

With Woodbridge passing the ball and moving into space well a lot of their play seemed to lack penetration in the final third, although they were certainly the better of the two sides in midfield during the opening period.

The second half saw Haverhill cancel out their opponents' dominance in the midfield, although Woodbridge's play saw them chasing the ball more than they may have liked.

Adam Ben-Saud went close more than once to doubling his side's lead, including a curling effort that came back into play off the crossbar, Tony Boto and substitute Craig Jennings both coming close for the hosts, only to be denied by Benstead and the post respectively.

In the end Woodbridge shared the points as they found an equaliser after 74 minutes, a free kick being awarded 25 yards out and Paul Berry taking advantage to curl the ball into the top right corner and past a helpless Benstead.

HAVERHILL ROVERS RESERVES

BRAINTREE TOWN RESERVES

(report by Gary Brown)

Haverhill powered their way into the next round of the cup with an impressive display at home to Braintree.

After a delayed start, caused by a mix up with match officials, Haverhill were soon on top with Bradley Deeks and Jamie Challis dominating in midfield.

After 16 minutes Paul Jenkin latched onto a loose header from a Braintree defender and unleashed a powerful half volley past the hapless 'keeper from fully 30 yards to open the scoring.

The Haverhill pressure continued throughout the first half with chances created and missed but, after 36 minutes, skipper Ben Cowling was fouled on the edge of the box and Jenkin added his second from the free kick via a deflection from a Braintree defender.

Jenkin was provided with at least three opportunities to complete his hat trick either side of half time, the best being after 50 minutes when he was released by Cowling, but he slotted the ball just past the left upright with the Braintree 'keeper beaten.

The Haverhill lead was finally increased in the 68th minute by a tap in from Neil Hammond after a corner.

Seven minutes later Lee Sharp added a fourth from the spot after a rampaging Cowling had been tripped in the penalty area.

Braintree scored a consolation goal with 5 minutes left on the clock when a weak shot hit Neil Hammond and wrong footed Haverhill 'keeper Tom Edwards.
